Animal Therapy in Spanish/Adulting 101

Animal Therapy in Spanish

You may have seen recently in the new that many guinea pigs were found in a home in northeast Iowa.  They were all up for adopt at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.  Spanish teacher Kris Ward was able to adopt two of the guinea pigs to have in her classroom.  Carlos and Sebastian were named by Spanish students and have already been a big hit (with all of us)!  Animals in the classroom have been proven to help manage and decrease stress of students in the classroom.  There will be lots of love given to these two!

Adulting 101

On Wednesday, all students in the senior class participated in Adulting 101 sponsored by Iowa Big North and local businesses.  As part of the program, students received lives with professions, debt, families and income. Through meetings with banks, insurance agencies, relators, car dealerships, and online grocery shopping, students calculated a moth in the life of a 28 year old based on their career and education choices.  This real life simulation causes some anxiety with students as they realize there is more to being independent than meets the eye.  Students were overheard talking about how to crunch finances, share expenses, and balance the life were dealt. What a great way to begin thinking about life beyond graduation and the practical details.

District Needs Assessment Survey and Wrestling Room/Ag Industrial Tech

District Needs Assessment Survey

If you haven't completed our needs assessment survey, please do so.  This provides the district important feedback as we work to improve what we do.  We are working with the Iowa Association of School Boards in getting this completed.  It helps us as we work to improve student acheivement in the district.  You can access the survey from this link:

Wrestling Room/Ag Industrial Tech

The district has what is potentially a good problem, but it forces a difficult decision.  Currently, the district has $1,068,386 (about 5.5% of the total cost) in unassigned funds for the current building project.  The primary purpose of these funds is to act as contingency funds to handle any change orders that will come up.  We all know there will be change orders, but because of the construction method and how quickly it will be completed, the consultant is telling us we could have up to $500,000 in funds left over by the end of the project.  Adding a wrestling room or increasing the size of the Ag Industrial Tech addition had been previously discussed.  I asked the architect for some sample ideas that would fit into that budget and how the cost would change if we did it now versus waiting until the project was done.  It would add slightly to the cost to wait.

Coming into the last meeting, my recommendation to the board was to wait until the entire project is done to truly see how much extra money will be left over after the project is complete, and then we could decide what to do with it.  We would know the exact amount that we could afford to do.  That would make everything easier; however, about an hour before the meeting, I received a call from the architect that making the decision now on the Ag/Industrial Tech addition could reduce the cost of that addition from the estimated $500,000 down to around $300,000.  We didn't have a lot of time to process it, so the board did the prudent thing and decided to hold a special meeting where additional information could be shared and it would give them more time to think about it.  In addition, this special meeting gives our stakeholders an opportunity to weigh in as well.  That meeting will be Tuesday, March 27th at 6 pm in the high school cafeteria.

Wrestling Room
A little background information; currently, the wrestling room is at the CWC and is 41' X 95' or 3,895 square feet.  It makes sense to have the room back at the high school as it provides better access to locker rooms, supplies, and it's more accessible during the day for other potential uses by PE classes and others outside of wrestling season.  Another primary concern is hygiene as the wrestlers get very sweaty during practice and then have to walk over to the high school in the freezing weather to shower and clean up.  One option that has been previously discussed is to take the current woodshop and adjacent classroom and turn that into the wrestling room.  With the new Ag/Industrial tech addition, the woodshop is a place that could be freed up.  This space would be 36' X 98' or 3,528 square feet.  It is slightly smaller than the existing room but would get them into our building.  As our wrestling program continues to improve and grow, space to practice could be a definite concern.  On a related note, when the site work was being done for the new addition, the board had the contractor complete site work in anticipation of a future wrestling room attached to the southwest corner of the new building.

The architect sent me four options for a wrestling room starting with a smaller one at 48 X 80 or 3,840 square feet.  This is pretty close to the same size as the current room but could be built at a cost to match the available funds.  He then sent me three larger options with the largest being 5,860 square feet and having an estimated cost in the area of $750,000 for the largest and the others falling somewhere in between.  None of these costs include mats, special flooring or other needed accessories for the room.  Because it wouldn't cost much more to wait until the project was done, I would recommend to the board that nothing be done with this until the building project is done and we know exactly what we have left for money.

You can view the initial wrestling room sketches here.

Ag/Industrial Technology Center
We are building an Ag/Industrial Tech Center as part of the project, but we settled on a compromise for size.  More space is always needed, but when estimating costs of the project, this was the size we thought we could afford.  As we continue to partner with local businesses and industries, we hope to be able to bring their experts in to work with our students in our center to provide our students with a head start in skills to fill local needs.  We have an incredibly strong Vocational Agriculture Program and are working to build our Industrial Technology program into a first class program as well.  We are looking at this type of model.

When I found out we could have extra funds, I asked the architect for some options that fit within the budget.  He sent me some examples that are all about the same size, but have different locations on the south side of the new Ag/IT Building.  Though the cost we're talking about is for a shell of a building with basic lights and electrical.  It doesn't include equipment or other amenities.  Again, because it wouldn't cost much more to wait until the project was done, I would recommend we wait until the project was complete and then make a decision as we would know exactly what amount we had available.  However, the architect pointed out that if we decided now, we could simply move the south wall of the new building 36 feet south and purchase the additional materials in between for a large reduction in costs.  If we wait until the project is complete, we would have the original south wall of the building and a second south wall 36 feet south of the original for the addition.  by not having to purchase the additional wall, we could see significant savings.  That's what brings this issue to the forefront at this time.

You can view the initial sketches of the Ag/IT addition here.

Here's the revised sketch if it's done as part of the project.

Final Thoughts
The decision the board is looking at Monday night is as follows:  1. Do we wait until the end of the project before doing anything so we know exactly how much we will have in funds. Or  2. Do we get bids to see what it would cost to add the wrestling room on now and look at that later (there may be some costs in calculating this request).  or 3. Do we get bids to see what it would cost to add the Ag/Industrial Technology Center now and decide later what to do with the extra funds that may be left.  Honestly, I don't see 2 as a choice at this time.  If we want to look at a wresting room down the road, then I will suggest the board go with option 1 so we know exactly what we have available.  It could be more then we think.  this would also give the wrestling community time to do some fund-raising if they wanted to go with more expensive options.  If we decide to go with the Ag/Industrial Tech Center then I would recommend we go with bids at this time.  The savings is significant in doing it ahead of time.  However, the bids could come in high and the board still could decide not to do it.
There is also some talk about using the extra money for building security.  We are currently working on our current buildings using our SAVE/PPEL funds and have plans built into the new building to address this as well.  These funds and the building funds can only be used for infrastructure.  We are putting in a secure entrance that will require everyone to be allowed into the office before entering the building.  We have upgraded the video system at the high school and are also doing this at the elementary/middle school.  If you have any thoughts on any of this, please let us know or be sure to attend the board meeting Tuesday, March 27th at 6 pm in the high school cafeteria.

Iowa Assessments/Blood Drive

Iowa Assessments

Iowa Assessments were administered at NHHS from March 20-22 with make ups following next week.  Students in grades 9-11 took the full battery of tests as well as an interests inventory and sample test. Students will be able to opt out of one final in semester 1 next year if they show proficiency in math and reading or show a year plus of growth in both tests.  Seniors do not take Iowa Assessments and were released off campus during testing times and began class at 10:15. Result from the assessments are expected in late April.

Blood Drive

The NHHS Student Senate Annual Blood Drive was March 21 in the high school gym.  The American Red Cross provided all materials and certified staff for the day.  Appointments were available the week before and walk ins were accepted both of students and staff and the community. The student senate set the goal of donating 22 units and surpassed that with 26 units collected. Students volunteers were utilized through the day and organized by Ms. Nelson, the student senate advisor.  What a great way to make a difference!

From the Middle: Week of March 26

Middle School Midmester Begins:

We are ready for our second annual Midmester!  Students begin with the new classes on Monday, March 26th and are looking forward to a different school day. Students will have three blocks where they are taking different classes.  We will have classes about babysitting, how to help in a disaster, cooking, fitness, and so much more.  It is a special time to see our students learn about the Core and 21st Century skills in a different manner.  We encourage everyone to stop in and see what is happening.   The school is partnering with various business and individuals in the community to create hands-on opportunities for our students.  We want to thank everyone for their support of this event and our schools.  Follow us on Facebook or Twitter for daily updates.  The newspaper will also be running a special section in the April 13th edition.  We will also be having a community open house on April 13th from 4-6 pm in the Middle School.  We hope to see you then!

Here is a link to the classes and the schedule: Midmester 2018

Mrs. Rodgers Class Learns About The Human Body:

How are rats similar to the human body?  That was the topic in 8th grade science class this past week.  Once students got past the "gross" moments and got into the dissection, students were able to learn about our bodies and the differences between organisms.   It was a great learning experience for all students!

Building Project

As the weather warms up, the contractors are getting ready to go to work.  We have started to receive materials for the project and will continue to receive more as spring progresses.  These deliveries are completed by large semi-trucks and require a lot of space to move around.  We generally have them drive down by the CWC and then go west to the athletic field fence and back to the project area.  I mention this because we need you and your child's help in keeping these areas open.  Parking gets tight, but there is enough room if everyone parks away from the fence area.  We have cones up to help with knowing where to park.  We know it's inconvenient, but it's part of the construction process.  If your child has any questions on where to park, he/she should stop into the high school office.

Other Items

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching and signals several things happening.  First, is Iowa Assessments.  These are required by the state and the district uses the data to plan instruction, interventions, and other related items for the following year.  Please take a few minutes to visit with your child of the importance that he/she does his/her best on the tests.  We need as accurate of information as possible to help with our planning.

Second, registration is going on throughout the district.  If you have a child who will be 4 years old by September 15th, please contact the elementary office for more information or to register your child.  If you have a 3 year old child, we also have a program for them that meets two half days per week to expose them to schooling.  Again, you can check with the elementary office for more information.  In addition, high school students have been working on registration for next year.  Please check with your child to make sure they have completed and submitted their registration for next school year.  All of this helps the district as we plan for scheduling and staffing for next school year.

Finally, a reminder that we will be having school on the Thursday before Easter.  It was designated as a make-up day on our calendar and because of the days we've missed, we will have classes that day.  Friday before Easter and the Monday after Easter will remain as vacation days.

Bringing the Work World to NHHS/STEM Best Technology/LEAD Update

Bringing the Work World to NHHS

We continue to strive for opportunities to connect NHHS students to business and industry as well as the needs of adult life.  This week, we had visitors in Mr. Hemann's class to discuss insurance and loans rates and well as college and work options.  If you are interested in partnering with us at any please feel free to contact us!

STEM Best Technology

We have been very fortunate to be part of a group of school who has not just once, but twice, received funding from the state-wide STEM Best Grant to fund Iowa BIG North.  Along with Charles City, Osage and RRMR, we were able to our communication tools for use across district line and with business partners in our initiatives.  Each site was granted funds to update our access with large screen monitors and high tech speakers to use Zoom for meeting times.  Students quickly assembled the equipment and are now able to communicate electronically face-to-face more effectively.

LEAD Update

The LEAD group continued their journey to building their individual principles and talking about use of time this week with a visit from author Ethan Miller.  The LEAD group spent semester 1 studying and discussing Miller's first book and were part of the launch of his 2nd book on Thursday where they all received a copy.  With the help of community member Ryan Rausch, student have now been able to connect with Miller both electronically and in person and become a part of his own vision of the 6 Key Principles he lives and teaches daily.

From the Middle: Week of March 19

Middle School Musical A Success:

It is an exciting time for our students at the Middle School.  After weeks of preparation, we are now presenting the Musical, Wipeout.  We have tickets still available for the Friday performance and can be purchased at the door for $5.00.  Students have been using every available moment to be ready.  A huge shoutout to Mrs. Cantu and Ms. Remmen for all of the countless hours of extra preparation for our students.  A big thank you to all of the parents for all of the flexibility and help getting students to practice to make this happen..... As they say in show business... Lights, Camera, Action!

Iowa Assessments Followed By Midmester:

Iowa Assessments are coming the week of March 19th - March 22nd.  It is important that your child get proper sleep and eat breakfast to help them do their very best.  Students have been working hard this year and we look forward to seeing them perform on these assessments.  We have implemented individual grade level rewards for students to encourage them to do their best.  We also have set goals for our school improvement and I will be serving a BBQ lunch to students if we meet our goal.

In addition, one of the goals at New Hampton Middle School during the 2017-18 year is to continue to build a passion for learning at all ages.  Students learn best when a connection is made between content and the real-world.  This school year, teachers have been working hard to learn about Project Based Learning focusing around the learning process.   Our staff has designed courses to showcase the passion of teachers while being interesting to students.

All Midmester Academy courses are aligned to the 21st century skills required through the Iowa Core Curriculum and contain a unique end product. Students and staff will be addressing a driving question for each course as designed by the instructor(s).  Our goal is to expose our students to a greater amount of content that may not be a part of their curricular course work, address additional 21st century skills, develop critical thinking skills, foster collaboration, and build on employability skills.

Students signed up for Midmester Academy classes at the end of first semester. They will be notified shortly of the classes they will be enrolled by grade level teachers.  All of the courses are located in the handbook found on the middle school website.  Midmester Academy will take place March 26 - April 13th.  On April 13th from 4 pm-6 pm, we will have a showcase night where students will be tour guides for parents and guests.  This event will take place at the middle school complex and parents are encouraged to enter by the office doors and leave from the gym.  Our students will be following a schedule of three Midmester classes, interventions, lunch, and band and choir.

Our teachers look forward to this new integration of passion learning that will continue to enhance our educational system.  We continue to explore innovative ways to make learning more meaningful and relevant to our students.   As a district our Midmester Academy style of learning will feed into the High School J-term and Iowa Big programs.  Please take time to review our courses and call the middle school if you have any questions or need clarification.  Also, feel free to stop in and see all of the great learning that will be taking place March 26 - April 13th.

Hackathon/Parade of Bands/J-term at Rotary

Hackthon Begins Fall Registration

As part of our fall registration, 25 students from NHHS joined 75 other students from Charles City, Osage, and RRMR for the Iowa BIG North Hackathon to determine interest in the program for the 2018-19.  Students 8-11 are registering for classes with Ms. Kipp this week and next to work through their required courses as well as any elective they would like to take.

The Hackathon is a "mini-course" in an afternoon of what Iowa BIG North is and how students find their initiatives and pursue their passions. All students in 10th and 11th grade are invited to attend a Hackathon.  There will be another event available on April 5.  Students should contact Dr. Updegraff, Mr. Kuennen, Ms. Kipp or Mrs. Anderson if interested.

Parade of Bands

The annual parade of bands for grades 5-12 was Tuesday night and was a great success!  Not only did jazz bands from all levels who competed last week perform, but there were group pieces where students were able to collaborate with students from different grades and building.  Mr. and Mrs. Adam surround the music for the concert around musicals, movies, and cartoon theme which was a big draw for both kids and parents in attendance.  What a great celebration of the music happening in our district!

J-term at Rotary

Six students were given the opportunity to share their J-term experience with Rotary this week.  Charly Loss, Ann-Sophie Huebler, Noah Fenske, Madison Flick, Madison Kolbet, and Ethan Rosonke were able to talk about their courses, what they gained from the experience and how it connected to their futures.  Rotary members were very receptive and we hope to continue to engage community members to help us make the experience better for all!
