From the Middle: Week of March 5

Cafe Laures Opens to Young Readers:

Last week Mrs. Laures found a creative way to introduce different genres to 5th grade students.  She worked with our instructional coach, Mrs. Hoy to come up with the idea.  Students were greeted at the door by Mrs. Laures all dressed up as a host for the cafe.  Students were asked for their reservation and then seated at tables all decorated like a cafe.   At the tables, there were books for students to taste to see if they liked different types of books.  Students learned how to preview books quickly to see if they were interested. When students left the class, they had some ideas about books they would be interested in reading based on the short taste they had for each book.

Spotlight of the Week- Mrs. Olson:

Mrs. Olson is a 6th grade math teacher at NHMS.  Each day, Mrs. Olson uses a variety of instructional practices to engage her students such as technology, daily reviews as bell ringers, pair share, individual practice, and movement.  She has a great understanding of the 6th grade math standards and what are essential for students to master for future success.  She teams with her other content teachers to discuss how concepts are built upon and is always looking for new ways to teach students.  Midmester is coming soon and Mrs. Olson has taught the class Owl Teach You to Sew.  Students really enjoyed this class and learning the basics of sewing.  We look forward to Midmester!
